Domain Extensions Value Explained

domain extensions

Domain Extensions are the suffixes at the end of your website’s URL. It’s main function may be to conclude your website’s name. But it also acts as a means of identifying what type of site it is. At least, this was true when the World Wide Web started out in 1989. Since this is an article about SEO, we have to make that connection happen.

The one between Domain Extensions and Search Engine Optimisation. That shouldn’t be difficult! You may already know what a Domain Extension is, but can the different ones have an effect on your website’s performance? And how so? Let’s find out together, dear reader!

Brief History of WWW

WWW stands for World Wide Web, which is an information system that links documents on the internet, to one another. Think of websites, they are simply documents that our browsers download, and display. We interact with them, information is traded, and we are done.

Today this is still the exact same system being used, albeit with very different participants. Back then, there were no such things as Web APIs or Facebook, yuk! Only gorgeous HTML on a Dial-up connection, screaming as if in pain, whenever it needed to actually do any work!

Domain Extensions on WWW

So WWW is an information system, right. But as it is an information system, there needs to be a system of categorising all this information, otherwise it won’t be very effective, right? And what if two sets of data are categorised in similar ways, things can get confusing. That is where Domain Extensions enter the picture.

See, WWW does not allow duplicates of the same addresses to be registered on it. That would be like one town having 14 houses registered as 9 Main Street, imagine the chaos of finding the right one? Having only one website allocated to a particular Extension is perfect because then there can be no confusion. You go to that address and you will find what it is that you are looking for.

Enter SEO

Now, if this is not your first time in this Blog, you may have picked up on a theme. We really like talking about SEO! And as such, here we go! Now, we have made reference to the types of Domain Extensions available to internet users in our previous article about Authority Backlinks. A quick recap on what that article said; the type of Domain Extension can have a severe bearing on the performance of your website in Search Engine results.

Their effectiveness is roughly in the following order:

  1. .com
  2. .edu
  3. .org
  4. etc.  < Looks like a Domain Extension | is not a Domain Extension.

Who Cares?

The logic behind this is actually quite sound. If there is a finite number of possible domain names for a given Domain Extension, meaning that eventually every possible (usable) website name will be occupied. To the Gods of the Internet, Search Engines, this means that the websites registered within a particular Domain Extension are considered to be more trustworthy, for a number of reasons.

They cost more to register, there is increasing competition for those Domain Names, they have a higher probability of being legitimate websites instead of some spam network. Having a relevantly named .com address for your website is essentially the backbone of any potential SEO you may want to do.

Domain Extensions are extremely important, and as time passes and the internet grows, more and more focus will be diverted toward the uniqueness and prime real estate that is a clear, relevant, concise Domain Name within the appropriate category of Domain Extensions. Whether its a .com, .org, or even a .xxx (yes, those exist), be sure to follow your industry best practices and be aware of what your particular God is thinking, or calculating.. Whatever it is that they do up there in the Cloud * wink *
